I have 2 chickens about 18 mths old. For the past 2 weeks 1 has been laying soft shelled eggs each day & her bottom looks sore & red. I feed them a commercial mix & they also have access to grit. She otherwise seems healthy & happy. Should I be concerned?

You may need to add oyster shell. And I assume you are feeding a layer mix. If not, you should be. Grit aids in digestion, oyster shell add the calcium needed for hard shells.

it’s either stress or may be sick probly best to take her to a vet to be safe

They could be nervous about something, could be sick or, most likely not have enough calcium. You should by some crushed oyster shell and spread it all over your chicken yard. Grit is not the same thing, it helps them digest but does not add the calcuim. If this does not help you may have a sick chicken.

Lack of calcium. Feed your birds oyster shell.
