As long as you're a AOL member you can download AOL McAfee VirusScan Plus free and use it for free. I have read the reviews and it sounds to be a pretty good product.

One of the answerers to your question said that it is a virus or places a virus on your computer. That is incorrect, real time protection means that it runs in the background all of the time. If you have another scanner running it will alert to finding a virus on your system which is an erroneous message. NEVER run 2 different scanners on the same computer.

Yes. It has automatic updates, virus protection, email protection, and anti spyware with real time protection. I just got it last month. It replaced Active Virus Shield.

Looks legit.
Free forever? Who knows. If you or your computer live forever, we'll know then.

I am not aware of McAfee being purchased by AOL...

McAfee is a good anti-virus / firewall solution... IF it is properly configured, automatically updating, enabled... and if the user has a modicum of common sense combined with good browsing habits for which there is no substitution.

McAfee is not free... you must purchase the program AND a subscription for the updates. If you have received the program free with some package or new computer.. then you must purchase a subscription to continue the service.
