I found an mp3 of a song labeled “Broken Earth” by a band called “Soft Machine” many years ago, and I’ve been wondering who the actual artist was since then (I know that Soft Machine isn’t it). I’ve seen it brought up on many different forums and email lists, but I’ve never seen a definitive conclusion.

The lyrics go roughly something like this:

No change the day
couldn’t count on you anyway
might lights have turned from red to gray
down a dead man’s curve

hear the dogs outside
all the strays lay quiet for awhile
hoping for a break in the broken earth, earth

chorus:
use all of my time
use anything you can find
to write me down
like the broken earth

the silhouettes start to fade
here come the days of no more shade
it’s gonna to leave you in a cold, cold place
for what it’s worth

stand awake in to the sun
counting people but there really is no one
to take you though the church
of your kind, kind

[repeat chorus x2]

The song is about 3:06 seconds long
