I’m kitting out a workshop for my fiancee as a surprise when he moves to his new home. He wants to “tinker” mechanically, not woodworking, more car fix up or alternative energy creations. What would you put in his new workshop for tools? Thanks to all in advance!
3 great answers! Thank you everyone… I’ll do the workbench, the lighting, the shop vac, and then price out the rest of the items on the first answer list and give him a gift card to get them. Wonderful, thank you everyone!

I have a HUGE slash pile that I want to turn into furniture and usable items. I’m a big fan of rustic / lodge furnishings and decor, and would like to try my hand at making some myself. What kind of tools do you recommend I buy? What other supplies? Until I know whether I can do this, I don’t want to invest in expensive power tools or a workbench. Just the basics. I have a hammer and screwdrivers, and that’s about it. Ideas?? Also, what tool would I use to scratch designs into the wood?

I am going to soon be building up my own toolbox and am not too familiar with the different brands’ quality and dependability. Do you prefer Craftsman, Husky, Ryobi, Makita, Stanley, Workforce etc. or something else. A combination? Hand tools of one, power tools of another? I think you get the idea. Thank you for your consideration.

I have a steel patio door going to my deck. It is a 64″ X 20″ full light opening. A friend of mine gave me a 64″ X 22″ insert containing blinds built into the window. What power tools do I need to cut the steel other than a hacksaw?

I’m not much of a handyman. I can fix basic things, like pretty much anybody; and I guess I would just muddle through some basic home fixes to save money now that I’m moving out on my own.

I figure it would be a good investment to get a toolbox and some basic tools for basic home repairs. What should I stock it with?

So far I’ve been looking at Sears and Home Depot for circular saws, table saws and sanders. We build our own custom furniture sporadically, but we’ve always borrowed tools so I think it’s time we get our own. What features should I look for and is there one brand that is much better quality?
